Need an extra layer of protection on the road? These detectors will get the job done.
We don’t encourage speeding, obviously, but if you’re the type to cruise a few mph above the limit, we recommend having a radar detector onboard just in case. These units are among the best on the market, and come highly recommended by the Road & Track staff.
After decades of using the same casing for its ever-evolving V1 radar detector, Valentine has finally unleashed its all-new unit,

the V1 Gen2
Sporting an all-new design and magnesium body, the V1 Gen2 detector uses SAW-D2L and LNA technologies to improve sensor range. It’s a bit pricey, sure, but you’re certainly getting your money’s worth.
If you’re shopping for security on a budget, you can’t do much better than the Uniden DFR7. While it’s not as capable as the most expensive detectors on this list, the DFR7 outperforms pretty much everything in its price range. Additionally, it has built-in GPS for red light cameras and speed cameras, as well as and false alert filtering.
The Redline 360c is one of the most expensive plug-and-play radar detectors on the market, and for good reason. It has three built-in antennas—two in the front and one in the back—as well as directional alerts, a stealth design to avoid being spotted by radar detector detectors (yes, they’re real things), as well as built-in Wi-Fi connectivity.
The R7 is the most hardcore detector in Uniden’s range. Priced from $500, it has supreme long range capabilities, a built-in GPS system, a color OLED display, and directional alerts.
The 9500iX is a bit older than some of the more expensive detectors on this list, but it’s still supremely reliable, and priced relatively affordably.
No, you’re not getting the cutting-edge range or directional alerts, but the core detecting features are still there. Consider it a high-end budget option.
If you’re interested in keeping the clutter on your windshield to a minimum, consider the Radenso Pro M. It’s a lot smaller than your average high-end detector, and comes included with many of the same features.
The Pro M is also undetectable by radar detector detectors, perfect for if ultimate stealth is your goal.
